APRIL 10 - 20, 2006
The Last Degree to the geographic North Pole
The team successfully reached GPS 89.999°N at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19. Despite numerous pressure ridges and leads (open water), as well as fast-moving drifting ice, they arrived at the geographic North Pole as scheduled and in good health. They were flown to Ice Station Borneo where they connected with their flight off the ice.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, family, friends; and to all the students who followed the expedition over the internet.

The team at the geographic North Pole

Doug

The Last Degree

--- Veteran explorer Doug Stoup and his team of adventurers followed in the footsteps of Nansen, Peary and Cook -- trekking over drifiting ice pack on the Arctic Ocean to the Geographic North Pole -- literally the top of the world.

---Doug, along with Peter Turkstra, Paul Hubner, Scott Shawyer, Fred Losani, Steve Stipsits and Ted Wilkes flew from Longyearbyen, Svalbard (Norway) to Borneo Ice Station at 89N; where they skied the remaining 115 kilometers / 72 miles to the Pole.
--- The focus was not only to arrive at the Geographic North Pole, but to raise $500,000 for schools, children and families that need assistance -- it was a success.
--- The team sent back daily dispatches via satellite; allowing students to ask questions over the internet.
