On October 20th, 2001, six
of America's extreme skiers, snowboarders and
award-winning filmmakers boarded a 19-meter sail
cutter on the Falkland Islands and crossed the
Scotia Sea to South Georgia. The team endured
intense weather conditions and rough seas -- both
on route and during their month-long stay on the
island.
While in the early 1900's, Sir
Ernest Shackleton's
odyssey made
South Georgia famous; a hundred years later, the
North Face Team experienced first hand, the winds
and dangerous and unpredictable glaciers/crevasses
of this remote part of the world. At one point all
of their tents were destroyed by 100-mile gusts and
their boat nearly drifted out to sea.
20 hours of sunlight permitted
the team to travel at all hours (when conditions
were favorable). But ultimately, nature was to
determine just where and when they would trudge
forward. Through it all, they were able to climb,
ski and explore one of the most formidable places
on earth -- a sea-rise of abandoned whaling
stations and exotic marine wildlife -- a true
adventure.

The expedition
is slated to air as an episode of GLOBAL ADVENTURE
on OLN-TV
(dates TBA in 2002). Footage will also appear in
Warren
Miller
Films
annual feature.
